Do I Really Need a Day-Of-Coordinator?
I thought it may be helpful to answer a good but frequent question that I get asked which is, “why do I need a day-of-coordinator when I have a venue coordinator?” Many ceremony sites, especially churches, come with a representative who will take care of the details for your ceremony. Many reception sites, especially hotels and ballrooms, come with a representative who will help set up and ensure your reception runs smoothly. I have met venue coordinators who are absolutely amazing and incredibly helpful (the venue coordinator at my wedding was great!) However, none of these individuals are a representative for the BRIDE and GROOM.
From my experience, the venue coordinator makes sure the venue is meeting the bride’s needs as they have promised whereas a day of coordinator is concentrated on the bride and groom’s vision first. A venue coordinator will often rely on a day of coordinator to help with emergencies or to consult with about small details they may not be aware of. I was helping at a wedding recently with a great venue coordinator but he still had questions for me about what I thought the bride would want in certain situations, where the presents were going at the end of the night, what to do when the groomsmen cake showed up with damages, etc. When the mother of the bride became overwhelmed, she came to me for questions which allowed the venue coordinator to concentrate on making sure the reception was set up perfectly.
I find that having a day-of-coordinator allows the venue coordinator, as well as the bride and her family, to feel more relaxed knowing they have someone who will speak on behalf of the bride. I spend time talking to the bride in detail before the wedding to make sure I know exactly how she sees the day going. This allows me to feel comfortable making decisions on the day of and to know what situations are appropriate to go to the bride or mother of the bride for questions. So if you are a bride and want someone there to represent YOU, then a day-of-coordinator is the person to contact!
